International Standard Book Numbers
(ISBNs)
Purchased Through Mind Like Water
(electronic formats only)
I. What Are ISBNs?
The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a 10-digit number that
uniquely identifies books and book-like products published
internationally.
The purpose of the ISBN is to establish and
identify one title or edition of a title from one specific publisher and
is unique to that edition, allowing for more efficient marketing of
products by booksellers, libraries, universities, wholesalers and
distributors.
The U.S. ISBN Agency (http://www.isbn.org)
is responsible for assigning the ISBN Publisher Prefix to those publishers
with a residence or office in the U.S. that are publishing their titles
within the U.S.
Every ISBN consists of ten digits that are
divided into four parts. One of these four parts is the Publisher
identifier, which identifies a particular publisher.
IMPORTANT:
Therefore, by purchasing an ISBN from Mind Like Water, your ebook will be
identified through its ISBN as being published by Mind Like Water, Inc. The
ISBN applies ONLY to the format and publication you requested the
ISBN be assigned to upon ordering (for example, the pdf version published
in September 2004). The copyright page of this ebook should reflect Mind
Like Water, Inc. as the publisher.
A separate ISBN must be assigned to the
different formats in which a particular title is published, i.e., paper,
cloth, microfilm, braille, multimedia sets, electronic, microcomputer
software programs on various disk size, tape, cassette, etc. All formats
have a separate ISBN. (For electronic books, that means that each format -
html, pdf, lit, etc., must have its own ISBN.) If a multi-volume work is
sold only as a set, one ISBN must be assigned to the whole set of volumes.
If individual volumes of the set are also being sold separately, each
volume must be assigned an individual ISBN. Revised editions require a new
ISBN. Once an ISBN is assigned to a title, it cannot be reassigned even if
the title goes out of print. When a title is reprinted, regardless of
price change, the original ISBN must be maintained.
Publications that have been assigned an
ISBN must be reported by the publisher (i.e., Mind Like Water) to
R.R. Bowker as the database of record for the ISBN Agency. Publications
will be listed in Bowker's Books In Print (http://www.bowker.com/catalog/000022.htm).
IMPORTANT: Therefore, by
purchasing an ISBN from Mind Like Water, your ebook will be identified in
Books In Print as being published by Mind Like Water, Inc.
II. Mind Like Water as Publisher
Mind Like Water is ONLY a publisher
with respect to the specific format and publication you requested the ISBN
be assigned to.
IMPORTANT: Mind
Like Water will NOT be responsible in any way for creating, marketing or
selling thE ebook TO WHICH AN ISBN HAS BEEN ASSIGNED! AS PUBLISHER, We ARE
ONLY PROVIDING THE SERVICE OF ASSIGNING YOUR eBOOK AN ISBN.
You are free
to pursue another publisher for your ebook who will provide MORE services.
THAT PUBLISHER WILL NEED TO ASSIGN A NEW ISBN FOR YOUR EBOOK.
If
you acquire another publisher:
If your ebook has been acquired from another publisher and has been
reprinted and carries the imprint of the new publisher and the new
publisher's ISBN, then the new publisher must give the ISBN of the
previous edition (i.e., the ISBN assigned from Mind Like Water) as well as
their own on the verso of the title page.
Example: ISBN 0-666-00123-5 (previously
published by XY, ISBN 0-8420-0091-X) or ISBN 0-666-00123-5 (previously
ISBN 0-8420-0091-X)
