P.P.S.  Here's a sample Chapter:

Chapter 3 Professors are pussycats

Never be afraid to speak with a professor! I repeat NEVER be afraid to speak with a professor, they're pussycats even if they seem like cranky old tigers.

The best time to speak with a professor is during his scheduled office hours, usually during the week. You should plan on visiting the professor at least once during the semester--I recommend visiting more than once. Why? Because these visits show you have initiative. You are telling him that his class is important to you and that you want to succeed. Do you think the professor will remember your visit when it comes time to hand out grades? Yes.

Now let me mention a few caveats to visiting a professor. First, he will usually be busy and may be having a bad day. Second, you will probably have to wait outside his office until he is finished speaking with another student or until he is off the phone. Although you are just as busy as he is, have patience. Third, do not visit the professor unless you have a legitimate reason, such as the following:

  • Homework problems
  • Wrong answers on quizzes or tests
  • Focus on what to study
  • Concern about your grade
  • Career possibilities in his field
  • Graduate School

Another reason to visit the professor is that grades are not necessarily "carved in stone." I recall my Calculus II class. On the second exam, I confused two methods of integration. I calculated the problems correctly using the wrong methods. Consequently, my grade on the exam was a D. I thought about giving up or dropping the class, but I thought I would go and talk to the professor and tell him what I had done. In the end, he gave me credit for the answers and changed my grade to a B.

Always ask questions. Remember, if you are confused about something, chances are other people in the class are too. Professors can often be intimidating; therefore, it may seem difficult to ask a question. Here is how you justify raising your hand. Remember the check that you wrote or the loan you will have to pay back to take his overpriced class. That's right. You are paying a lot of money for his services. Think of your professor as a contractor, consultant or service person that you have hired. Would you be afraid to ask your mechanic or accountant a question? In fact, consider the whole university as a business and the professors as employees. You are paying a lot of money for their service. Think of yourself as a shareholder in this business because you are making regular investments (i.e., paying tuition and, in some cases, providing free work for your professor). Your return on this investment should be a pleasurable experience and a degree.

Please remember that professors are people--not gods. It's OK to respect them for their intelligence, but don't let them intimidate you.

Most of the time, professors like questions if they are well thought out. Questions spur other questions and break the monotony of a class period. By asking questions, you are showing the professor that you want to learn. You may even impress him with the depth of the question.

If you are shy, as I used to be, then think of questions before the class. Write down these questions and practice asking them. Anticipate his response and be ready for the professor to ask you a question.

Rogue Student: FREE College InformationNow that I have convinced you to ask questions, be careful not to ask questions if you haven't been paying attention or if you just like to hear yourself talk. These questions will do more damage than not asking any questions. You will find students who ask questions just for the sake of talking. The questions usually have no meaning or relevance. You will recognize these questions when the professor pauses and struggles to answer the question without calling the student an idiot.
