Conversion
to PDF
(1) 1 book = 1 PDF file
If Mind Like
Water is doing the PDF conversion for you:
- 1 book = 1
Word (preferred) or 1 HTML file
- If you are submitting an HTML file, you
will also need to submit all images as
separate files, as images are not embedded. If
you are submitting a Word file, you do not
need to submit all images as separate files,
as the images are embedded.
(2) Use Adobe
Acrobat version 1.2 or later to convert your book to PDF.
(3)
PDF files must not have ANY security
protections. Follett will set the security
parameters at their end. You can request security above those protections
Follett automatically sets. See Digital
rights management for more information.
(4) The
ebook title must appear in the document
properties window. To do this:
File -->
Document Properties or Ctrl / d
Type in the
ebook title where it says Title:
Author and
Subject are optional.
You can provide the information or leave
blank.
This step is
important, because the
title field appears at the top of every page
when a library patron is viewing the book
using a browser.
(5) The ebook
must be paginated properly in Adobe
Acrobat.
If the ebook
has numbered pages and the pages don't start
with page 1, (i.e., there is a cover page, or
frontispiece with pages labeled with i, ii,
iii, etc.) or if the numbered pages don't
match the page numbers shown on the bottom of
the Acrobat window, you will need to use
Acrobat document paging.
To adjust the
document paging, select the thumbnail tab on
the lower left side of the Acrobat window.
Right click on the thumbnail that needs to be
adjusted and type in the corresponding page
number on the physical page. Note that paging
can be set for a range of numbers.
Proper
pagination is necessary in order for
librarians and
patrons to use the "find page"
button.
(6)
The PDF document should be bookmarked. Bookmarks
can be automatically generated from chapter
(and subchapter) headings when a document is
converted to PDF. Bookmarks can also be
added to a PDF document.
This
step is important for both the librarian and
the patron.
From the results page that appears after a librarian
performs a search within the catalogue, the librarian can
click on an ebook title and open the PDF file
containing the book. The
librarian then is allowed to perform 15 clicks
within the book to see what the book is like. If
the file is bookmarked, the librarian can easily maneuver through the book,
versus having to use up a click by using the Forward or Back buttons. This also
allows you to direct the librarian to such things as an author bio page, a book
review page, final chapter, etc.
(7) To provide librarians with more information that
will help them select your ebook title for their library collections, it is
recommended that you consider including, for example, the following: an author
bio page in your book, a page that provides book reviews and/or testimonials, a
page that lists other books you have written. These pages should be bookmarked.
(8) The maximum
PDF file
size is 5 megabytes. If your
book exceeds this, please contact us to
discuss. We may be able to negotiate the size
with Follett.
(9) Choose low
resolution (vs. high resolution) for any
images, graphics, etc. to help minimize file
size.
